Six String Strummin' · Beginner · Unit 4 · Lesson 1

Lesson 1: The G Chord

The big open G — three fingers, six strings ·

WHAT YOU'LL LEARN

  • I can form G and strum all six strings cleanly.
  • I can change between G and Em.
  • I can play 'Wide Open'.

🕸Loose Wrist3 min

  1. Strum muted strings (rest your fretting hand lightly across them) in steady quarters.
  2. All motion from the wrist and forearm — shoulder stays quiet.
  3. Add a gentle down-up: down on the beat, up on the 'and'.

🎸Building the G5 min

  1. Finger 2 on fret 3 of string 6, finger 1 on fret 2 of string 5, finger 3 on fret 3 of string 1.
  2. It's a stretch — drop your thumb behind the neck to open the hand.
  3. Strum all six; pick string by string to find mutes.

🥁Count It3 min

  1. Count the rhythm out loud before you play.
  2. Turn on Counts or the metronome and lock in with it.
  3. Loop it slowly first; speed comes on its own.

🎵Wide Open7 min

  1. Play 'Wide Open' — feel how G lifts and Em settles.
  2. That emotional contrast is why songs move between chords.
4 Wide Open G and Em — the brightest and moodiest of your chords, side by side.

👂Train Your Ear2 min

  1. Press play on any line above, look away, and listen once through.
  2. Hum the first bar back, then find it on the guitar by ear.

Make It Yours3 min

  1. Take one idea from this lesson and bend it — change a rhythm, reorder the chords.
  2. Play your version twice so it sticks.

🍎Teacher Guide

PREP

  • The G Chord: The big open G — three fingers, six strings

COMMON MISTAKES & FIXES

  • Rushing ahead of the beat. → Fix: Turn the metronome on and drop the tempo until it feels easy.
  • Buzzing or muted notes. → Fix: Press just behind the fret with the fingertip, thumb relaxed behind the neck.

IF STRUGGLING

  • Drop the tempo well below comfortable and loop one bar.
  • Play just the chord changes (or just the rhythm) before combining.

IF ADVANCED

  • Bring it to full tempo with the metronome.
  • Add your own variation — a different rhythm, an extra chord.

EXTENSIONS

  • Apply tonight's skill to a song you already love.

TALKING POINTS

  • You're building real technique — the same fundamentals every guitarist runs on.
