Lesson 3: Down-Up Strumming

The pattern that makes chords groove ·

WHAT YOU'LL LEARN

  • I can strum 'down down-up down down-up' evenly.
  • I can apply the pattern to Em, Am, and G.
  • I can play 'Steady Rolling'.

🕸Loose Wrist3 min

  1. Strum muted strings (rest your fretting hand lightly across them) in steady quarters.
  2. All motion from the wrist and forearm — shoulder stays quiet.
  3. Add a gentle down-up: down on the beat, up on the 'and'.

The Up-Strum5 min

  1. Your arm swings down-up constantly like a pendulum — even when not hitting strings.
  2. Down-strums land on beats; up-strums catch the 'and' on the way back.
  3. Up-strums only need the top 3-4 strings. Light and easy.

🥁Count It3 min

  1. Count the rhythm out loud before you play.
  2. Turn on Counts or the metronome and lock in with it.
  3. Loop it slowly first; speed comes on its own.
1 Up-Strum Feel Straight eighths: down-up-down-up. Ups are lighter — brush the top strings.

📖Play It7 min

  1. Read it slowly and cleanly the first time through.
  2. Drag-select any tricky spot and loop it.
  3. Use the tempo slider — move up only when it's clean.
2 Down, Down-Up D, D-U, D, D-U on Em — down on beats, up on the 'and'.

🎵Steady Rolling7 min

  1. Play 'Steady Rolling' — pendulum never stops, even during changes.
  2. If a change is late, keep strumming open strings and land the next bar.
4 Steady Rolling Your first grooving strum song — let the wrist do the work.

👂Train Your Ear2 min

  1. Press play on any line above, look away, and listen once through.
  2. Hum the first bar back, then find it on the guitar by ear.

Make It Yours3 min

  1. Take one idea from this lesson and bend it — change a rhythm, reorder the chords.
  2. Play your version twice so it sticks.

🍎Teacher Guide

PREP

  • Down-Up Strumming: The pattern that makes chords groove

COMMON MISTAKES & FIXES

  • Rushing ahead of the beat. → Fix: Turn the metronome on and drop the tempo until it feels easy.
  • Buzzing or muted notes. → Fix: Press just behind the fret with the fingertip, thumb relaxed behind the neck.

IF STRUGGLING

  • Drop the tempo well below comfortable and loop one bar.
  • Play just the chord changes (or just the rhythm) before combining.

IF ADVANCED

  • Bring it to full tempo with the metronome.
  • Add your own variation — a different rhythm, an extra chord.

EXTENSIONS

  • Apply tonight's skill to a song you already love.

TALKING POINTS

  • The pendulum is the secret: once your arm keeps time, chords just drop into place.
