What's the Best Age to Start Music Lessons?

Parents ask us this every week, and the honest answer is: earlier than you think, but with the right format. At POMA we start Tiny Tot Piano at age 4, because at that age music learning looks like games — steady-beat activities, finding notes, singing, and short bursts of focused play.

For piano, ages 4–6 is a wonderful window. Small hands are fine; the Bastien Primer books we use are designed for them. For guitar, we recommend age 6 and up, when a 3/4-size instrument fits comfortably. Drums and wind instruments (flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, trombone) work best around age 7–8, when lung capacity and coordination catch up.

The more important question is format. Young children do better in small groups than one-on-one — the energy of other kids keeps them engaged for a full lesson, and performing together from day one makes music social instead of solitary.

The sign your child is ready isn't musical at all: it's whether they can follow simple directions in a group and get excited about a weekly routine. If that sounds like your kid, they're ready. And if you're not sure, call us at 386-299-8258 — we'll help you figure it out, no pressure.

Ready to see your child light up?

Registration takes about two minutes. We'll follow up with everything you need before the first lesson.
