Lesson 2: Notes on String 2

B, C, and D open up real melodies ·

WHAT YOU'LL LEARN

  • I can play B (open), C (fret 1), and D (fret 3) on string 2.
  • I can cross between strings 1 and 2 in a melody.
  • I can play 'City Lights'.

🕸Wake Up the Fingers3 min

  1. Place fingers 1-2-3-4 on frets 1-2-3-4 of string 1, one at a time.
  2. Press, sound each note, lift. Slow is fine — this is a gym for your hand.
  3. Shake out your hand, then do one more pass.

One Finger per Fret5 min

  1. Index finger owns fret 1, ring finger owns fret 3 — same as string 1.
  2. Keep unused fingers hovering close to the strings, not flying away.
  3. Crossing strings: move the pick, keep the fretting hand quiet.

🥁Count It3 min

  1. Count the rhythm out loud before you play.
  2. Turn on Counts or the metronome and lock in with it.
  3. Loop it slowly first; speed comes on its own.
1 Two-Note Pulse B and D trade places — keep the pulse dead even.

📖Play It7 min

  1. Read it slowly and cleanly the first time through.
  2. Drag-select any tricky spot and loop it.
  3. Use the tempo slider — move up only when it's clean.
2 B, C, D Up and down the new notes — first finger C, ring finger D.

  1. Play 'City Lights' — aim for zero gaps between notes.
  2. Loop bars 3-4 if the descent trips you up.
4 City Lights A stroll on string 2 — smooth changes, ringing tone.

👂Train Your Ear2 min

  1. Press play on any line above, look away, and listen once through.
  2. Hum the first bar back, then find it on the guitar by ear.

Make It Yours3 min

  1. Take one idea from this lesson and bend it — change a rhythm, reorder the chords.
  2. Play your version twice so it sticks.

🍎Teacher Guide

PREP

  • Notes on String 2: B, C, and D open up real melodies

COMMON MISTAKES & FIXES

  • Rushing ahead of the beat. → Fix: Turn the metronome on and drop the tempo until it feels easy.
  • Buzzing or muted notes. → Fix: Press just behind the fret with the fingertip, thumb relaxed behind the neck.

IF STRUGGLING

  • Drop the tempo well below comfortable and loop one bar.
  • Play just the chord changes (or just the rhythm) before combining.

IF ADVANCED

  • Bring it to full tempo with the metronome.
  • Add your own variation — a different rhythm, an extra chord.

EXTENSIONS

  • Apply tonight's skill to a song you already love.

TALKING POINTS

  • You're building real technique — the same fundamentals every guitarist runs on.
